Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Rock

I.
a man sits on a rock
resting after his long trip
though he knows there is more
ahead

II
the small child
lost in the crowd
chooses the largest rock
and looks over the crowd
at his family

III
a small rock is carried
and set into place
as a room begins to form
into a house

IV
scampering quickly
away from the bird
the bug hides under
a rock

V
a deep hole
hidden by a rock
provides a safe home
for an animal

VI
a rock is shaped
and placed at the end of a stick
to help the family gain
their daily meals

VII
a rock raised
above her head
she chased away
the stranger

VIII
knowing that this would be
their spot forever
they placed a rock there
with their names upon it

IX
sitting in the car
a log road trip ahead
using a rock to write
on the dashboard

X
a rock was used
to crush the berries
for the Native American's
Paintings

XI
after jumping in the river
she striped
and set her clothes
on a rock to dry

XII
the foot print was saved
the rock held it inside
making the fossil
that we have now

XIII
the rock was broken
after the little girl had thrown it
only to find
the gems that had formed inside
